HAVING turned opinions on comics and sci-fi series from one of geek to chic, global cult favourite Heroes are now looking to infiltrate the stereo as well as the TV with its original soundtrack.

A 12 second introductory track entitled Heroes Theme consisting of a mere noise is not the best introduction to this otherwise eclectic soundtrack.

Not famed for its use of pop-rock like other American outputs (such as The OC), the interspersed instrumental tidbits from the hit show by Wendy & Lisa serve as necessary reminders of which soundtrack you are actually listening to.

But as explained by the show's Executive Producer, Allan Arkush, in the cover notes, the CD is more about creating a "musical connection" between fans and the makers of the show.

While hardened cynics may instead see it as a means of cashing in on a lucrative franchise, the collection of music still works well.

The Brighton Port Authority featuring the everlasting Iggy Pop sets the tone for a clean and summer tinged mix of tracks, quickly supported by The New Pornographers with the upbeat All For Swinging You Around.

A sprinkling of Panic At The Disco and Nada Surf keep the Americana going before a halt of more OST score trips up the flow.

But the haunting Californian sounds of the Chills soon remedy any interruptions backed up by the ever-solid Death Cab For Cutie.

The inclusion of The Jesus & Mary Chain, Bob Dylan and, of course, David Bowie's over-used Heroes gives the album a little substance and a reprieve from an assault of current hot property while still managing to keep the same spirit of the overall compilation.

Fans of the show will no doubt enjoy the memorable soundtrack hooks running throughout the album, but even the uninitiated will find the mix of classic and contemporary sure to appeal.

The Heroes Soundtrack is currently out now and the Pioneer are giving away two copies to lucky readers. To be with a chance of winning just answer the following question:

Complete this phrase from the first season of Heroes: Save the cheerleader, save the...?

a) City b) World c) Universe

Put your answer on a postcard along with your full name, address and a daytime telephone number and send it to 'Heroes Competition', North Wales Pioneer, 22 Penrhyn Road, Colwyn Bay, Conwy, LL29 8LG.

The closing date is Wednesday, June 25.

Usual NWN Media terms and conditions apply.
