OPERA fans will be treated to a world premiere when The Enchanted Island screens in Llandudno Junction and Prestatyn.
The Met: Live in HD continues to broadcast live in to cinemas across the UK in 2012 with The Enchanted Island - a contemporary revival of the 18th century pastiche form by British librettist Jeremy Sams, conducted by William Christie.
Starring Plácido Domingo as Neptune, David Daniels as Prospero, Joyce DiDonato as Sycorax, Danielle de Niese as Ariel and Luca Pisaroni as Caliban, this modern Baroque fantasy will be seen in 80 screens throughout the country, including Cineworld in Llandudno Junction and Prestatyn's Scala.
"We wanted to create a modern vehicle for Baroque music," said Peter Gelb, general manager of the Metropolitan Opera. "So I turned to Jeremy Sams and conductor William Christie."
Sams, who is a writer, film director, translator, orchestrator and composer, has brought all the strands of his theatrical knowledge together to create a new English libretto in collaboration with Christie - a Baroque opera expert.
As well as writing and producing several West End shows, Sams translated the complete Ring Cycle for the ENO, The Merry Widow for Covent Garden and The Threepenny Opera for the Donmar Warehouse.
In the vein of 18th century pastiche opera, The Enchanted Island is inspired by two Shakespeare plays and arias by various composers.
The story find the four lovers from A Midsummer Night's Dream landed on an island where Sycorax and Prospero from The Tempest are embroiled in a supernatural battle.
British director Phelim McDermott and designer Julian Crouch have created a dark fairy tale showcase for this 21st century interpretation of a pastiche.
"I believe this hybrid creation will honour the Baroque tradition, yet be modern in spirit," added Gelb.
Comprising arias by Handel, Rameau and Vivaldi, with smaller excerpts from other composers, the score will be a veritable banquet for lovers of Baroque music.
