A BEE-THEMED flower display got the judges buzzing at a prestitious flower show.

The Conwy County entry took the gold medal at the RHS flower show at Tatton Park which ran from July 21 to 25.

The brightly-coloured flowebed, entitled “Save Our Swarm”, was designed by Conwy’s Environment Service.

A council spokesperson said: “The flowerbed was fun and vibrant and attracted a lot of attention from the crowd throughout the week for both its visual appeal and serious environmental message.

Depicting a giant honey bee and three hives sitting on honeycomb, the flowerbed represented the importance of bees, drawing attention to the plight of the honey bee whose numbers have been falling in recent years. It also incorporate the theme of the International Year of Biodiversity.”

The Save Our Swarm flowerbed was constructed using six tonnes of soil and over 7,000 bedding plants, all grown in peat-free compost at the Council’s nursery in Old Colwyn.

At the end of the show the plants were sold to members of the public to raise money for the Ty Gobaith hospice, which cares for ill children.

Cllr Mike Priestly, Conwy’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “I’d like to congratulate all the staff involved on this, their latest success at this prestigious show.

Cheshire and the North West is an important tourism market for Conwy so the show offers us an excellent opportunity to raise the County’s profile. This year, we took brochures and leaflets to distribute to the show visitors to encourage them to visit us soon.”
