A 17TH CENTURY seaside hotel is getting closer to its planned revamp.
Plans for Deganwy Castle Hotel were displayed at the Guildhall, Conwy, and have been registered with Conwy County Borough Council’s planning committee.
Planning consultants Hourigan Connolly applied to Conwy on behalf of owners Coastal and Country Developments Ltd to convert the site.
The application includes residential apartments, a restaraunt and public bar, and car parking. Nine of the rooms will be converted into boutique hotel rooms.
Part of the plans for the Castle Hotel would include the demolition of the railway-facing west wing, and replacing it with a modern apartment block with slate and glass construction.
Public consultation on the plans for the hotel were held in August last year.
Deganwy councillor Jason Weyman said he was impressed by the potential offered by the plans.
He said: “It is exciting. Any development on the old site is an improvement to what’s there at the moment.”
Daniel Connolly, director of planners Hourigan Connolly, said they would hope to redevelop the west wing with a new look, but retain and preserve the older parts of the building.
He said: “It’s a case of bringing a landmark building back into viability.”
Rumours the 17th century listed building was set to shut were circulating in Deganwy in 2008, when it was believed a housing development was going to be built on the land.
The prominent building was an integral part of community events in the village, including the Deganwy Festival and the Boxing Day Dip; as well as a meeting point for various groups.
The hotel finally closed its doors in January 2010.
