THE PARADE route for the Llandudno Extravaganza has been forced to change due to disruptive bridge work.

The traditional parade, which travels through the town during the annual event, includes historic vehicles, musical acts, and a host of Victorian costumes.

But fears over congestion caused by the closure of Maesdu Bridge has resulted in organisers changing the starting point.

Chairman of the Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza committee, Greg Robbins, confirmed the bridge closure was an important issue during planning for this year's event.

He said: “It's something we have seriously spoken about. It won't be starting from the station and will be a different route.”

The Extravaganza attracts thousands of visitors into Llandudno over the May Bank Holiday weekend, and concerns over the flood of traffic becoming grid-locked at the Links roundabout on Conwy Road have been raised due to one of the main entry points into the town being shut.

But Mr Robbins was confident the event would run smoothly thanks to the preparation work.

He added: “We have talked to North Wales Police and Conwy County Highways department. It's a case of ensuring minimum disruption.”

Despite the planning being carried out, Llandudno Town Councillor for Tudno, Doreen Websell, was still concerned traffic would be an issue.

She said: “We still get terrible traffic on a Saturday with it bottle-necking, so it will be even worse on that weekend. If people come through Deganwy they still get sent straight down this way. And all the fairground rides will be coming this way as well.

“I just hope they manage to get together and make sure a plan is put into place, and it is carefully gone through before hand.”
