A young couple are looking forward to their wedding after the groom p-p-p-popped the question in the Welsh Mountain Zoo’s penguin enclosure.

Ben Smith, 24, asked his partner of three years Sarah Evans, 26, to marry him during a visit to the zoo’s Humboldt Penguins.

The couple met whilst travelling in Australia in 2006, and spent their first Valentines Day together on Philip Island, home to the world’s largest Humboldt penguin colony.

“Sarah didn’t have any idea about the proposal, she didn’t even know we were coming to the zoo until this morning and she had no idea about the Penguin Encounter until this afternoon!” Ben said.

“I had a good idea of how I wanted it to go in my head and thankfully it all went to plan.”

Ben proposed whilst feeding the penguins, and Sarah said she was taken completely by surprise by the whole experience.

“It was completely out of the blue.

“I really love Penguins anyway so I was really pleased when Ben told me we were going to meet and feed them.

“But then when Ben proposed that was really something else!” she said.

“After feeding some of the Humboldt Penguins, Ben handed me another bucket which I presumed would contain more fish.

“But when I opened the lid I saw the heart shaped box and then noticed that Ben had bent down on one knee.

“Then he started to read me a poem and I was so shocked I immediately started crying.”
