A PLANNING application is due to be submitted about a proposed health centre in Builth, following public drop-in sessions.

Sessions took place throughout the end of March and beginning of April, concerning the £4.9m integrated development.

The sessions were well attended and local people reported a number of issues which concerned them about the plans, including traffic management.

At a meeting in March, board member for adult services Councillor Rosemarie Harris told stakeholders she was hoping to submit a planning application in June.

“If that is successful, work could start on site as early as this autumn,” she said at the time.

“This is a ground-breaking project which will ensure a significant improvement in the range of services available for people in the town and its surrounding area.

“It is a project that is attracting considerable interest and could be a model for other rural areas in Wales.”

Plans for the integrated facility, which will replace Builth Wells Cottage Hospital, have been developed over the past few years with help from representatives of the local community, including local GPs.

The centre will be an extension to the council’s Brynhyfryd care home, which currently has 30 beds.

Additional services will include an integrated health and social care team comprising district nursing, domiciliary, social care and re-ablement teams, a volunteer advisory service, a suite for outpatients and therapies, a minor surgery suite, a dental practice, a Wellbeing Suite for health education, therapy, re-ablement and day support services and 12 en-suite care home rooms.

If the planning application is successful, work could start in Builth in October this year.
