A NEW initiative to boost recycling in Conwy has been launched.
More than 50,000 houses will be involved in the Recycle More project, which aims to ensure that all collected waste is reused.
Councillor Mike Priestley, cabinent member for the environment, said: “Recycle More will see our recycling rates rise above 50 per cent, save £600,000 of public money through reduced landfill costs this year alone and create jobs.
“We are now able to collect everything in one vehicle, which keeps fuel costs low and protects our environment.”
A fleet of colourful new vehicles will spearhead the scheme, and make it possible for food waste to be collected each week, rather than fortnightly as at present.
Under the new scheme residents will receive a caddy for the kitchen, and a supply of free compostable bin liners, as well as a blue lidded kerbside box with a lock attached.
The new collections, which started on Monday, will be rolled out around Conwy in the next few weeks.
Cllr Priestely said: “These improvements are fantastic news for the people of Conwy. Residents have been telling us that they want to be able to recycle more and we’ve listened.
“In order to make it easy to recycle, wherever you live, we are also working towards extending Recycle More to rural areas.”
Conwy County recyling officers will be out in the area to explain more about the new scheme. The first is June 1 in Glan Conwy estuary car park. June 3 will see them at Llandudno Victoria Centre, and on June 6 they will be at Chester Avenue car park, Kinmel Bay.
