Member’s anger as Wrexham fitness club closes

A DECISION to close a popular fitness centre in Wrexham at the end of the month has been met with anger.

Fitness First says it is shutting its branch in Holt Road, which employs 15 people, due to changes to its UK portfolio.

At this stage it says it will redeploy staff wherever it can.

Official word of the closure came in a letter from the company to the centre’s local members on Saturday.

It said the move was part of an ongoing restructuring programme and explained people could transfer their membership to other Fitness First branches.

However, the nearest are in Runcorn, Crewe and Telford, all of which are more than 20 miles away.

One member, who did not wish to be named. said: “My husband and I have both had memberships at Fitness First for the past year. I go six times a week and do all the classes and my husband uses it five times a week.

“We were really angry to find out it is closing. It’s really good value because we pay £16.25 each a month for membership and the cheapest clubs we can find locally are charging more than £30 a month.

“The government is always going on about people staying healthy but we can’t afford to pay that.

“Fitness First says we can transfer to its other branches but these are all miles away.”

She added: “Wrexham seems to be going downhill – we have a big empty Woolworths and other stores empty – and this is just part of it.”

A spokesman for Fitness First said: “We have made some changes to the UK portfolio which includes closing a small number of clubs.

“We are extremely grateful to the teams in these clubs, and we will look to redeploy people wherever we can, and encourage members to move to clubs nearby when we have them.”

Very simply, it's shutting because it's not paying its way any more, because the people of Wrexham aren't using it...now there's a surprise. Just because the population of a town wear tracksuits doesn't mean they're interested in athletic activity.

Total Fitness Wrexham can't be far off from closure either. Outdated cardio machines that are continually 'out of order'.

Obviously not looked that hard as waterworld is literally across the road and is much less than £30 a month.

Fitness First have closed quite a few gyms recently, including ours in Bradford. Can't understand why as membership was high and place was busy. Odd thing is that every time Fitness First close a gym, somebody else takes it over and manages to keep it open, often with lower charges. When I joined FF in 2003 they had 250 UK clubs. Now it's only 150 - What are they doing wrong??

I hope DW Sports doesn't attract the scruffy element who will be leaving Fitness First. The fake tan, t-shirts two sizes too small and steroid clientele. They can go to Total Fitness!

When i was there the changing rooms were stinking. A cleaner told me he was fed up clearing Joints from shower cubicles after a weekend. Beer bottles in Sauna etc. I dreaded going in around 9am as a few old boys had a habit of walking around naked together and heading for sauna. The same complaints sat forever on noticeboard. Good Luck at anyone trying to cancel ! Bbc watchdog hilighted them over a year ago... and their Small printed huge contract....

Evening Reader. An aspiration -fake tan, body art and membership of a "fitness" gym - I think I would consider euthanasia first.

As for losing jobs, just wait and see what will happen if this hapless council in Wrexham decide to charge for on street parking.
