A TOWYN MAN paralysed from the chest down has embarked on a pioneering 1,000-mile bikeride.

Terry Chard, 40, of Towyn, wants to become the first person to travel from Lands End to John O’Groats using a hand-bike.

He is taking on the challenge with his friend Mike Lewis, better known as DJ Kuta of N-Trance, to raise funds for charity.

The duo set out on June 9 and, after a sticky start caused by some technical difficulties when their trailer was jammed shut, they are now well on their way to their goal.

Terry broke his neck and spine in three places in a paragliding accident more than 10 years ago. The 40-year-old is now determined to set the first official record for a hand-bike journey from one end of Britain to the other.

Mike, who is based in Prestatyn and is taking part on a conventional bike, said he decided to take on the challenge out of admiration for his friend.

He said: “I haven’t had a drink since New Year. I’ve dropped over four stone since January - I’m a different man. But Terry does this kind of thing anyway.”

Speaking before setting out, Terry said that the pair would take a longer coastal route, but they have since decided to set the benchmark for future world record attempts.

He said: “I was a thrill seeker. I used to climb, race mountain bikes, jet ski, race motor cars and surf. I’m doing a lot of cycling locally. It’s not going to be easy, but obviously if it was easy it wouldn’t be worth doing.”

The funds raised will go to Help for Heroes, as Terry was formerly a soldier, and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Oswetry, where staff cared for Terry after his accident.
Mike said: “We’re hoping to do this in 11 to 12 days and we’re looking to raise at least five grand. We’re setting a world record - and the faster we do it, we’ll make it more fun for the next time. We’re going to go for it.”

Mike said that he was touched by the level of support. One member of the public went as far as donating £50 to them while they were struggling with their trailer.
