THE excitement of the London Olympics could be heading for Colwyn Bay.

County council officials want to lay on a huge event in Eirias Park to co-incide with the razzmatazz of the Games big opening ceremony in London next July.

The two-day event in Eirias Park would kick off with a free event and would involve a wide range of sporting and leisure activities in the park including zorbing and five-a-side competitions followed the next day by a live sreening of the opening cermony with tickets costing between £15 and £20.

It is hoped the event will match the success of the 2006 Children in Need concert when the likes of megastar Ronan Keating helped attract 10,000 into the arena which has a capacity of 22,000.

Conwy County Borough Council has already put down feelers for support and funding, and is being backed in principle by Bay of Colwyn Town Council. Its finance committee has been asked to look into the feasibility of making a £20,000 contribution.

Rachel Gill, the county council’s communications and marketing manager, said that after the Children in Need concert many people were eager for a similarly large event.

She said: “After the Children in Need event, people were asking ‘what next?’. It was one of the major concerts that year for Children in Need. We want to get people that excited about the Bay again.

“This is an exciting opportunity for Colwyn Bay and North Wales as a whole and we are working hard to secure all the support needed to make this a great event in July 2012.”

As well at the Town Council, the organisers are also in talks with the Welsh Government’s major events unit and Cartrefi Conwy. They also want businesses and community groups to provide sponsorship and ideas.

The organisers say an event on this scale would bring a host of benefits to the area, and would showcase Colwyn Bay’s ability to hold large-scale concerts and attract A-List stars.
