CALLS to extend ‘unnecessary’ short-stay parking on Presteigne’s high street said to be affecting businesses in the town has been refused by Powys County Council.

Cars which park in bays on the high street can currently only stay there for 20 minutes, and the town’s mayor, Councillor John Kendle has said that this is not long enough for people to do their shopping and that the high streets businesses are suffering because of this.

“People only have 20 minutes, and it isn’t long enough, it is unnecessary,” said Cllr Kendle.

Cllr Kendle said that people are now not parking on the street at all, and this is partly because of the increased effectiveness of Traffic Wardens since Powys County Council took over parking from Dyfed-Powys Police in April.
