A PARAPLEGIC and his friend have cycled the length of Britain.
Terry Chard, who was paralysed from the chest down after an accident 10 years ago, joined friend Mike Lewis, better known as DJ Kuta of N-Trance, in an epic ride from Lands End to John O’Groats.
Terry, an ex serviceman and self-confessed adrenaline junkie from Towyn, tackled the 880 mile journey despite not being able to use his legs.
His efforts may have earned him a place in the record books as he is making a bid for the Guiness Record for the furthest and fastest time for a rider on a hand bike.
Meanwhile Mike, from Prestatyn, has shed stones during training and while on the road.
Terry said: “I could sum it up in two words: rain and pain. The road was long and hard, we were cycling eight or nine hours a day.”
They have raised more than £2,000 which will be split between Help For Heroes and The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic and District Hospital, which cared for Terry after his paragliding accident.
Terry said: “We haven’t got all the money in yet, so the total hasn’t been determined. Some people said they’d sponsor me £1 a mile, believe it or not, and it looks like they’ll honour that.
“It was quite a trip. We met some really, really nice people. We met an old lady who said she’d got some money for her birthday and she wrote me a cheque. Outside Telford a woman with children in a car followed me 10 miles as her kids wanted to give me their icecream money.
Neither Mike or Terry intend to rest on their laurels. Mike has jetted off to Magaluf for the opening night of the BCM club, and Terry is already hatching a plan to bike from Blackpool Tower to the Eiffel Tower in the future.
