Summer traffic is choking Llandudno

CALLS have been made for a multi-storey car park to be built in Llandudno to solve the the town's car parking problems.

David Williams, chair of Llandudno Hospitality Association, said there just wasn't parking in to the town to cope with the numbers of visitors to the resort in the busy summer period.

“Until they build a multi-storey car park to bring about further parking in the town, there will always be an issue,” he said.

“It was very noticeable at Easter and the Spring Bank Holidays - there were cars parked all the way along Gloddaeth Street to West Shore.

“It really is quite urgent that something is done, as it does deter people from visiting the area.”

Mr Williams, who is also a director of the Ambassador Hotel, was speaking before a meeting of Llandudno Town Council's Community Services and Tourism Committee at which congestion issues will be discussed with Highway officials from Conwy County Borough Council.

Issues on the agenda at last night’s (Tuesday) meeting included the problem of camper vans parking overnight on the parade in spite of restrictions, as well as the use of coach parking bays along the promenade.

Members had noted at an earlier meeting that Llandudno did not provide an overnight parking space for camper vans, and discussed the possibility of allocating a seasonal site.

Issues were also raised regarding the congestion problems caused by coaches on the promenade, many of which pull up alongside the allotted bays rather than pulling into them directly.

Cllr Ann Yates, who requested that the issue of coach parking bays be discussed at the meeting, said that if the coaches did not use the bays provided, they were ‘abusing’ the work of the town council, who had lobbied for them to be put there.

She said: “My argument is, we the town council push for these bays for the coaches, but I'm constantly going along the prom and most of them park near the bays. And it's not a one-off - this has been happening a lot. I've seen a lot over the past six months.”

“We the Town Council put them there for them, and they're basically abusing them.”
Mr Williams added that problems with parking and congestion were not limited to the promenade.

He said: “I wouldn't say it's a promenade problem - it's a Llandudno problem as a whole. When the weather is excellent, particularly on Bank Holidays, there just isn't enough parking in the town.”
