A DOZEN kayakers were brought to safety by Llandudno's RNLI lifeboats on Sunday after they got into difficulties off the Great Orme.

The group from the Chester, Ellesmere Port and Wirral area, were paddling around the headland when they ran into an area of rough water to the east of the clifftop lighthouse.

One kayaker was thrown into the sea, slightly injuring himself, and a second member of the group sustained a back injury trying to help him.

As a result the group decided to radio Holyhead Coastguard to request assistance.
This led to Llandudno's inshore lifeboat launching at 11:45am, followed by the all-weather lifeboat Andy Pearce 15 minutes later.

The injured kayakers were brought on board the inshore boat and ferried to the larger lifeboat where they received treatment from the RNLI crew. They were then taken back to Llandudno, together with their kayaks.

The remaining ten craft were able to make their own way to Llandudno's north shore, closely escorted all the way by the inshore lifeboat.

All 12 canoeists were ashore by 1:15pm, with none of the group requiring further medical attention.
