A LEVEL results day has seen hundreds of proud youngsters across Anglesey and Gwynedd celebrating their achievements.

The results released today were above the national average for the UK in both areas and Anglesey and Gwynedd Councils have been quick to praise the hard work of pupils and teachers.

Richard Parry Jones, education director at Anglesey Council, said he was delighted with the Island’s results.

”The percentage achieving grades A-E across all subjects, at 98 per cent, is slightly higher than the national average at 97.2 per cent,” he said.

The percentage on the Island achieving the new top grade of A star was 5.7 per cent, which was slightly lower than the national average, but Mr Jones said it was encouraging that the A-E percentage was 100 per cent in a significant number of subjects.

Dr Brian Jones, the headteacher at Ysgol David Hughes, in Menai Bridge, said it had been an excellent year for results.

“The vast majority of students have succeeded in getting the grades they need to follow their first choice course or university,” he said.

“The students still realise that being well prepared with suitable qualifications will be beneficial to them and their future career prospects.”

Among t the many triumphs at the school, there was success for Sophie Black, who achieved three top grade A stars and is going on to study at Manchester University, Esyllt Martin, who achieved two A stars and an A and is also going on to study at Manchester University, and Rhys Hughes, who achieved two A stars and an A and is going on to study at Chester University.

Dewi R Jones, head of education at Gwynedd Council, congratulated Gwynedd students and teachers on their success.

“The percentage achieving grades A-E across all subjects, at 97.6 per cent, is slightly higher than the national figure, and the percentage achieving a grade A or better is also good.”

Neil Foden, headteacher at Ysgol Friars, in Bangor, also praised the performance of his students.

He said: “It looks as if this is going to be one of our best years as far as the top grades go.

“Youngsters across the board have done well.

“Thomas Lacey is possibly one of our most improved students as at GCSE he achieved 1B, 6C, 2D and 1E but he has now got 2 A* in law and sociology and B in history at A level.”

Three pupils from the school, Andrew Wietesca, Helen Griffith and Glyn Stevens, won places at Cambridge university and their were successes for Kelvin Cheung, who achieved four top grade A stars, and Ifan Williams, who achieved three A stars and an A grade.
