A HOSPICE facing financial ruin is enjoying an “excellent turnaround” in its fortunes.
St Kentigern Hospice had an enormous £300,000 hole in its budget which threatened its ability to continue 12 months ago but according to its chairman was now facing “vastly improved scenario” thanks to the actions trustees, staff, volunteers and the community.
Trefor Jones reveals in his latest upbeat assessment that the future is looking bright and plans are underway to build on the momentum witnessed.
“For example in July 2010 we raised £10,000 but in July 2011 it was £60,000 - an excellent turnaround,” said Mr Jones.
“However, we must not be complacent and I really hope all efforts can continue to deliver this sort of result.
“As a result of the improved position we have recruited a further Advanced Nurse Practioner in the In-Patient Unit and will be shortly joined by an Allied Health Professional in the Day Care Unit. “For the immediate future we have a new shop in Old Colwyn, a refurbished shop in Denbigh and a new shop in Rhuddlan to look forward to.
“Operationally we will be continuing to enhance both sides of our efforts in Day Care and in the In-Patient Unit.
“We are working closely with Betsi Cadwaladr on the concept of Hospice at Home to complement the work we carry out in the Hospice.”
St Kentigern Hospice costs £1.6 million a year to run and has cared for 1,900 day patients since it opened 10 years ago and more than 1,500 in-patients since 2003.
Mr Jones, unveiling plans for fundraising events including a Welly Walk at Bodelwyddan Castle on October 2, in cooperation with The Crysalis Trust, a 70s Disco on October 7 at The Oriel Hotel and a formal Dinner Dance at Ruthin Castle on October 15, added: “I cannot be generous enough with my thanks on the contributions made by the people and organisations of our Community, it is outstanding.
“It bears repeating that everybody has been part of this effort; children, teenagers, young families, men and women, the elderly, local companies and clubs, well done.”
