Don't destroy our town

CAMPAIGNERS trying to save their green spaces from development will flood a special county council meeting tomorrow.

Craig y Don resident and member of the Bodafon Fields Preservation Association, Ruby Williams, said councillors were not listening to residents, and the protest would show them how serious campaigners are.

She said: “From our point of view it’s important to see the whites of the eyes of our councillors; for them to get the message that a huge number of people throughout the county are not at all happy. Our wish is for them to do something about it.”

Ms Williams said the campaign group had received a swell of support from across Llandudno, as well as neighbouring villages like Deganwy.

She said: “Construction here starts a very dangerous precedent. People are protective about this tranche of green space, this wedge in the heart of Llandudno. It’s part of the scenery, it’s part of Llandudno.”

The meeting on Thursday is to discuss Conwy’s Local Development Plan which provides the planning strategy until 2022.

Outraged residents are concerned over building locations earmarked for possible development - such as 65 new homes on Bodafon field in Llandudno, dozens in green spaces surrounding Dwygyfylchi, and 870 homes in Abergele.

The special meeting was called for by Assembly Member Janet Finch Saunders following a surge in public opposition to the controversial document across the county.

According to Glan Conwy Community Councillor, Daniel Worsley, requests for clarification by the First Minister and Housing Minister regarding the development plan confirmed the process is “decided locally without government interference”.

He said: “If they are as good as their word then this would enable our councillors to decide this issue based on local evidence and needs free from external interference.
“This is the most important decision our council has had to make in a generation and I would urge them to make sure they are prepared and fully informed before making a decision which will have irreversible consequences for all of us.
“The message to our councillors is this: do you want to be remembered for having destroyed our county or for having saved it? Elections are due in May 2012 and the electorate will be informed which way their councillor voted on this important issue.”
