POWYS’ ability to handle major events has again been demonstrated after it hosted the Tour of Britain for the second year running.

That’s the view of Powys county councillor and portfolio holder for regeneration, Wynne Jones, who was given the honour of starting the race from Powis Castle.

Councillor Jones said the county could be proud of the way it had hosted the event.

He said: “I thought it was fantastic. There was a huge crowd and it was a unique setting at Powis Castle.

“It’s the first castle to castle stage ever in the Tour of Britain. It was an amazing occasion and one I will never forget.

“It was a great day for Powys and once again it’s been a good sunny day and Powys is well and truly on the map. I think the county should be very proud of itself, it’s shown that Powys is once again capable of hosting major events.”

Cllr Jones said the event had provided a fantastic opportunity to showcase the county and would also inject a massive financial boost to the economy.

He said: “It was a wonderful occasion and a great opportunity to show off Powis Castle. We know that during the entire stage last year £5 million of revenue was generated."

“It was wonderful to get a world champion, Mark Cavendish and our own local star Geraint Thomas here.
