THOUSANDS of food fans flocked to Flintshire over the weekend for the county town’s annual culinary festival.

The sixth Mold Food and Drink Festival drew crowds who came to see exhibitors at more than 70 stands as well as the celebrity chefs, live entertainment and interactive workshops.

John Les Tomos, chairman of the organising committee, declared the event a phenomenal success and said it was down to the co-operation and support of those involved, including volunteers, Mold Town Council and Flintshire Council.

“People have come from all over Britain,” he said. “A group of 20 people have come from London specifically to stay here. Every hotel in the area is booked up.”

He said the site on New Street Car Park now had electricity for the first time, a facility others wanting to host events in the town could benefit from in the future.

Celebrating the best in food and drink in and around Flintshire the festival saw visitors decorating cup cakes, tasting cheese and finding out more about local businesses selling award winning products.

The Flint and Vale of Clwyd Beekepers Association appeared at the event for the first time and enticed both young and old with a live bee demonstration, a honey tasting zone and honey competition.

Association member Kipper Davies said: “We’ve been very busy, it’s been absolutely excellent.”

The Mold Women’s Institute stand attracted 56 entries for a Best of Welsh Bake-off which aimed to find the tastiest bara brith made by home bakers.

“We’ve had entries from as far away as Bangor and even an entry from Rose Street School in Ruthin,” said Gwladys Williams, a Mold WI member.

“It’s the first year we’ve had a stand here so we’re hoping we can return in future years. We’ve had a lot of interest today which has been of benefit, especially from young mums who we are trying to attract to join.”

Many of the exhibitors found their products were so popular they sold out on Saturday and had to produce more for Sunday’s visitors.

Ann Busby, owner of Simply Relish which had a stall in the Celyn Farmers Market tent, said: “It’s been phenomenal, it really has. We’ve sold out of a lot of things. I’ll definitely come back next year. I’ve been amazed by the amount of people who have come.”

The weekend also saw a trio of celebrity chefs take to the stage to give cookery demonstrations. Festival favourites Graham Tinsley and Brian Mellor entertained the crowds on Saturday while Michelin starred chef and television personality Jean-Christophe Novelli wowed the audience in the cookery theatre on Sunday.

As well as tips from the experts the event also saw Shane Anthony from the Days Hotel crowned the Flintshire Chef of the Year 2011.

The festival crowds were also entertained by live music from a wide range of artists including Mold Town Band, Hotfoot Jazzmen, The Breaks and Linda Campbell.

As ever, the event was heaving, with hundreds of people crammed into the exhibitors' tents at any one time....and there were still idiots with prams and pushchairs getting in everyone's way.

Nice one....and nice to see an article about people enjoying themselves and good food and drink...without the usual reports of intoxicated idiots and their actions in the aftermath

"...idiots with prams and pushchairs..." should they not have been there?!

Roland what would you expect mums with prams to do leave the children home alone, and we are not idiots unlike some people!

"Roland what would you expect mums with prams to do leave the children home alone, and we are not idiots unlike some people!" - Carry them or use a front-facing sling?

Roland - what an ignorant comment. It is a FAMILY event and is going to be full of families. Would you prefer families be banned and it become an adults only drinking fest? Or maybe they should have closed it to everyone bar yourself and then you could've wandered around on your billy to your hearts content. Yes, i was there with my family, one of whom was in a PRAM and i jolly well hope i ran over your foot whilst i was there - sanctimonious busbody

Roland, are you suggesting that people with three or four children spend the entire day carrying ALL of them??

What a great event enjoyed by all who attended except for one individual who reminded me of Victor Meldrew but without the humour , there is always one moaning whinging sanctimonious waste of space who has to try and put the damper on things. At least we all enjoyed the weekend.

Well said Teabags! Roland do you honestly expect parents to CARRY their small children fairs like this just to please miserable buggers like yourself?! GET A GRIP!

teabags, you quite probably did run over my foot, and no doubt many others, too; as well as ramming their calves etc. But you probably wouldn't have noticed.

  11. Posted by: Roland Cleth at 08:39 on 27 September 2011 Report

Libby, I didn't say I didn't enjoy it, just that the only dampner on the day was seeing traffic jams caused by prams and pushchairs and various people losing their tempers because of the fact, not to mention the ramming.

teabags - "...are you suggesting that people with three or four children spend the entire day carrying ALL of them??" - If there are three or four of them, then, unless we're talking twins/triplets/quads, a couple of them should be old enough to walk...like ours did.

RC , did I mention you in my comment?

  14. Posted by: Roland Cleth at 13:54 on 27 September 2011 Report

No, libby, you didn't....who, in fact, did you have in mind?

  15. Posted by: kevinweston at 14:19 on 27 September 2011 Report

Thanks to Mr Les Tomos and team for creating a great weekend for Mold. Long may it continue.

  16. Posted by: teabags at 14:34 on 27 September 2011 Report

Roland, you're easy to wind up. No i didn't ram into everyone as you suggest - i was brought up properly. Prams are a fact of life - deal with it, your children must have used them once. You can no more have these events without prams than you can without SOMEBODY who has to moan. Maybe you could be productive and direct your energy to contacting the organisers to suggest that next year they space the stands out to allow more room instead of moaning?

  17. Posted by: Roland Cleth at 16:27 on 27 September 2011 Report

teabags, I contacted the organisers after the two previous years' festivals, but as ever, my voice of reason was ignored! To be honest, knowing how crammed it gets in those marquees, I definitely would not have taken a pushchair or pram into them. The kids would have been carried, or there'd be a rota system with Mrs. Cleth - as we do in shops where there's not much room. Anyway, you never know, maybe Les Tomos will be reading this.

RC , I was refering to a crumpy whinger I encountered at the event , as I dont know you it could well have been you, I dont know , maybe next year you need to contact the organisers and request admission to the show before it is open to the ordinary people such as myself

@Roland, but apart from the prams, you enjoyed yourself really didn't you!
