Turn off the phones, unplug the computer and have your 'Sorry, I can't make it tonight' excuses ready; the X Factor is back and it's bigger than ever. The nation's favourite singing contest continues its search for the next big thing this autumn, hoping to find someone with that elusive X Factor.

So as we settle down for another round of fireworks, fabulous singing and the odd disagreement amongst the judges, what can we expect from this year's series? And more importantly, what can we expect from the live finals?

Easily the most exciting part of the competition, the finals traditionally bring high drama as the stakes are raised, and this year looks set to be no different. The first and most obvious change is of course the judging line-up. Gone are Simon, Dannii and Cheryl and in their place are a host of new whippersnappers. Boy band legend Gary Barlow, feisty Tulisa Contostavlos and the über-confident Kelly Rowland have joined forces with old hand Louis Walsh, and now it would seem that we have X Factor: The Next Generation.

So far the judges seem to be gelling rather nicely but expect that all to change as we hit the live finals and the competition hots up. The X Factor is a contest, remember, and each judge will want someone from their category to win, whatever it takes. Will it finally be Louis's year, or will one of the others steal the prize from under his nose?

Either way, the new judges are set to bring exciting prospects for the 'celebrity duets' section in the final. The rumour mill tells us that Gary and Tulisa will be drawing on their bandmates for support, with Mark Owen helping Gary's contestants with a performance and Dappy assisting Tulisa. But the real excitement lies with the third new judge: will Kelly Rowland bring in former colleague Beyoncé to help lead her contestants to victory? Fans are hopeful, but Beyoncé's recent pregnancy may mean she'll have to take a rain check this year. Keep watching for more updates.

Another exciting new development to the live finals is the introduction of a more 'reality', Big Brother-style angle. Cameras are to be put in contestant's dressing rooms to record their warm-ups, wardrobe choices and hair and make-up adjustments, meaning that fans will get more access than ever before to the backstage element of the show.

Fans can also expect more from the live shows thanks to the newly revamped Xtra Factor. The sister show has always helped to enhance the popularity of the live finals, thanks to its backstage gossip and celebrity interviewees, but new presenter Olly Murs is set to get us closer to the action than ever before. A former contestant himself, Olly knows better than anyone how tense the finals can be, and it's expected that his cheeky nature and down-to-earth interviewing style will help put the contestants at ease as they prepare for the biggest performance of their lives.

And since the X Factor is likely to be your Saturday night date for the next few months, there's one or two things that you need to have (a decent selection of snacks, for one thing). But more importantly you need to ensure that you have an up-to-date TV Licence, to ensure that your X Factor habit won't get you into trouble, so make sure your licence is renewed and ready for this autumn. It looks like we're in for quite a ride.
