Prom cycling debate reopens

THE long running saga over whether cycling should be allowed on the promenade at Llandudno is back on the table.

Many members of the town council, are keen to debate the issue with some in favour of cycling on the sea front.

A Conwy County Borough Council task and finish group is looking at the implications and the town council will debate the issue after the group’s findings have been released.

Cllr Brian Bertola told a meeting of the town council: “I feel we must support cycling on the promenade, and always have. The county council have supported cycling through Old Colwyn, Colwyn Bay, Rhos on Sea, Glan y Mor Road and Bodafon Road, without any major incident - but we’ve got a 22-metre route and on the promenade and say we can’t do it.

“Do we expect people to cycle around on the road? It’s deadly unsafe. We should rethink our ideas on this and bring us into line with the rest of the county.”

In May, the county council said they would not pursue prosecutions against cyclists on the promenade while the Task and Finish group held its investigation, although the byelaw remains in place.

Cllr Joyce Audus-Williams disputed the town council’s official statement on the promenade being designated as a destination rather than a route.

She said: “I dispute that designation as I don’t understand why it’s not a route. I have cycled along the promenade twice since the moratorium was lifted. It can be used as a route.”
