THE GREAT Orme played host to some red-hot racing at the weekend as the Cambrian Rally roared into Llandudno.

More than 100 racers entered the 56th meeting of the rally, which featured stages in Clocaenog, Penmachno and Alwen forests as well as a re-introduced tarmac stage on Marine Drive around the Orme.

Ludlow pair Shaun Gardener and Benn Innes were the overall winners, finishing first in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evo with a time of 43min 33sec.

Llandudno racer Matt Edwards meanwhile finished fourth, just over a minute off the pace in a Subaru Impreza loaned at the last minute from Neville Jones of Vulcan Fasteners.

Matt was delighted with the overall finish, particularly after having just 24 hours to prepare in the car, and is now starting to make preparations for next season’s competition.

“It was a good result, about as good as we could have done given the short time. I only had about a day to prepare in the car, but it drove really well,” he said.

“The others had much more time in their cars, so it was a good result given the speed of the competition this year.”

Rob Jones and co-driver Peter Buckley also stretched their record of 24 consecutive appearances in the same vehicle at the Rally, finishing fifth in the 1400C 1:00 category in their faithful British Leyland Mini.
