UP TO a dozen jobs at a haulage firm on Wrexham Industrial Estate are at risk.

Staff at Norbert Dentressangle, formally TDG contract logistics, were told on Friday that cost cutting measures would need to take place at the site.

General manager James Beattie said: “In common with all retailers and their service providers, both Norbert Dentressangle and Shop Direct Group (SDG) – our customer in Wrexham – are operating in a tough economic climate, where controlling costs and reacting to changing conditions are key.

“Due to the volatile market, increased operational efficiencies and fluctuating volumes, we have reviewed our current staffing requirements and put forward a number of options for consideration by the union.

“Unite has subsequently taken the decision that the best course of action is to make a small number of roles redundant.

“The number of people affected is likely to be in the region of 12, out of a total workforce of 250 at our Wrexham site.

“While this is regrettable, these measures are necessary to ensure Norbert Dentressangle can continue to provide the most efficient and cost-effective service to our customers and long-term security for employees at our Wrexham site.”

Unite trade union regional co-ordinating officer Peter Hughes said he had met management to discuss the situation: “It’s early days, but they are looking to restructure,” he said.

Mr Hughes said the union would prefer to see staff lay-offs made through retirement or natural wastage rather than see pay cuts or reduced working hours.

Norbert Dentressangle’s takeover of TDG, which has been ongoing since the end of last year, became official this month, he said, prompting the restructure.
