THE World Cup dreams of George North and Wales were in tatters after a controversial 9-8 defeat against France.
Welsh players and fans were incensed after referee Alain Rolland ruled that Welsh captain Sam Wharburton speared tackled French wing Vincent Clerc.
North was involved in the move that set up Wales' first score, as Dusautoir was caught offside.
James Hook's excellent effort from the left hand side of the 22 put Wales in the driving seat with nine minutes gone.
The former Ysgol Uwchradd Bodedern pupil showed his power on 13 minutes, when charged into the French 22, but his foot eventually slipped into touch.
However, France took a 6-3 half time lead through penalties from young scrum half Morgan Parra.
The Frenchman made it 9-3 with a 50th minute penalty.
However, Wales resumed control of the match after Mike Phillips burst through the French defence for the only try of the game.
Warburton's red card may have caused anger among Welsh fans, but kicking was a major factor in the defeat.
Hook missed two further first half opportunities, and Lee Halfpenny was agonizingly close with a penalty from the halfway line.
The Welsh had 59 per cent of posession and the lion's share of territory, but will now have to bounce back for the third place play off against Australia on Friday.
