AN AXED library is to be demolished with the land earmarked for redevelopment.
Despite a campaign by residents and community leaders, Garden City library closed its doors to the public in May.
The closure came as Flintshire Council made £10 million of savings in this year’s budget, due to a reduced settlement from the Welsh Government and the impact of inflation.
Now a notice of demolition for the site on Sealand Avenue, which is owned by the council, is to be discussed by county planners on Wednesday.
Sealand councillor Christine Jones said: “The closure of the library was devastating. It has been difficult to accept it is gone and we cannot have it back.
“I would like to see something that is a benefit to the community to replace it. A community facility of low cost housing. We need something of benefit to the community.
“At the moment the site is an eyesore. We need something there are soon as possible, there is nothing worse than a derelict site in the middle of a street.”
Garden City and Gwernymynydd sites closed while Queensferry and Halkyn libraries were given a reprieve.
The battle to save Bagillt library is ongoing with an action group formed to try and take over the running of the site.
But council chief executive Colin Everett has gone on record to say libraries would be safe from further cuts in coming years.
A report to Flintshire Council’s planning committee states the building, which has recently been the target of vandalism and arson, is now surplus to requirements.
It adds the council intends to utilise the land for redevelopment in the near future.
