THOUSANDS of children will get an extra day off on Wednesday, with more than 50 schools across Flintshire and Wrexham confirming they will be shut due to a national teaching strike.
More schools are expected to follow once they have assessed what impact Wednesday’s 24-hour walkout will have on staffing levels.
Parents will be forced to make alternative childcare arrangements as teaching unions join millions of civil servants across the UK who are taking industrial action over government pension cuts.
So far 47 primary schools, 11 secondary schools and one special school have announced they will be closed to pupils. Another two primary schools will be partially shut but Deeside College plans to open.
The strike is also expected to hit hospitals, job centres, courts and many other public services.
Flintshire Council has confirmed it will be severely disrupted by the walkout and has announced a number of library and leisure centre closures. In June teachers staged at 24-hour walkout which caused more than 40 schools to close either fully or partially.
A spokesman for Flintshire Council said: “Parents will be notified whether or not individual schools will be open and they should also check the council’s website at www. flintshire.gov.uk for up-to-date information on school closures.”
