"Featureless" fear over latest design for Bay Hotspot

A RESIDENT has questioned design changes to the Colwyn Bay seafront development.

Brian Dean, 49, of Station Road, Colwyn Bay, is unhappy with the changes to the original design for the Watersports Hotspot on the town’s promenade on his blog, showing differences between K2 Architect's winning design and current designs shown in council promotions.

The architect's design won a public vote which began in December last year, with Conwy County Borough Council's cabinet choosing the design in February.

Hywel Jones, the project manager, said: "Last year, the design competition presented six different concepts/ideas. The winning design was refined and since then numerous consultation events have taken place until the final design was submitted for planning approval.

"Planning approval was given in October and the design has not changed since then."

But Mr Dean noted that new displays of the design showed a different plan, with straighter edges and fewerglass features to the building.

He said: "There was a lot of glass, projecting roofs and curved wall - you've now got a featureless, slablike appearance. There's a high probability that that's going look unattractive.

"There was a public mandate for the original winning design, but the design has changed dramatically, and it's not clear that there's a mandate for the design as it stands."

He said it would be a "great downside" if, despite the good intentions of planners and designers, the area was left with an unattractive building.
