A RHOS on Sea runner is getting warmed up to take part in next year’s Olympic Torch Relay.

Georgia Garner, 15, has received a provisional offer to carry the Olympic Torch as it passes through Conwy next May.

Georgia, who has beaten dyslexia and dyspraxia to become a champion long distance athlete, has been selected as one of 8,000 inspirational individuals specially selected to carry the torch, and the St David’s College pupil said she couldn’t wait to take part.

She said: “I’m buzzing, I can’t wait!” We found out in an email a few days ago. I cried, but they were happy tears, not sad!”

“They were looking for inspirational people, and I have dyslexia and dyspraxia. I found school really hard and it just didn’t make sense to me, but I started running and I’ve put all my energy into it.”

“I’ve told all my friends and my running coach, who thought I was having him on at first! It took a while to convince him I wasn’t joking.”

Georgia’s determination to not let her conditions set her back has seen her embark on a tough training schedule, helping her pick up a number of long distance running titles including becoming the North Wales 3000m and Cross Country Champion for her age group, as well as the North Wales Road Running Champion for U17 Girls.

Mother Michelle said that she was very proud of Georgia, having also nominated her other daughter Libby, 12, who swam the width of the British channel to raise money for charity.

She said: “I felt really disappointed for Libby, but I’m so proud of Georgia. I really hope that members of St David’s will be able to come down - they’ve been fantastic in helping Georgia.”
