Villagers lose out

CAMPAIGNERS hoping to protect land in their village say they are disappointed to lose out.

An application to give village green status to a site in Pentrefelin, Glan Conwy, was rejected by Conwy County Borough Council because of complex byelaws which had been in place from 1994 until 2008.

The crux of the matter is that a stretch of land needs to have been used as of right for a minimum of 20 years before it can pass the test to be given village green status.

Dan Worsley, a Glan Conwy community councillor who had campaigned for the change, said he was disappointed by the decision but understood why the council had made it.

He said: “We feel that we made a very good case, because the land was in use for 44 years in both places before the byelaws were in place, and since 2008 they were used without byelaws being in place.”

“We don’t feel justice has been done, but understand why the council rejected it.”
Mr Worsley said the decision had put campaigners off seeking similar protection for Acre Field and other areas.
