Sandy shore is out of tune with campaigners

CAMPAIGNERS and councillors have called for extra defences to a seaside beauty spot after storms again left it covered in sand.

Llandudno's West Shore was left with large banks of sand blocking the cycle path and nearby roads after much of the North Wales coast was lashed by the wind and rain.

Resort roads were virtually blocked off as sand blew off the beach and the boating lake was almost full of sand with the iconic White Rabbit statue surrounded.

With plans for the area's development in the pipeline, campaigners are hopeful that a solution can be found to the problem of sand drifts.

Cllr Margaret Lyon, chair of the Friends of West Shore group, said: “We would like to get the council to investigate a permanent means of containing the sand before it blows over.”

Marram grass holds back many of the dunes on the shore, and the Friends are hopeful they can persuade the council to plant it elsewhere on the beach.

Cycling campaigner Roy Spilsbury said although recent winds had also affected places other than the West Shore, the impact of the winds on the beach had to be studied to help preserve the “flagship” cycle path.

He said: “What we should keep in mind is the cycle path was put down as part of coastal protection. It really needs to be studied exactly how the sand is operating.
“I think there is a solution there somewhere. We need to manage the sand.”

Mr Spilsbury added that he was “far from giving up hope” that a solution to the problem could be found.
