RGC 1404 picked up a comfortable win in their first fixture of 2012, claiming the Bleddyn Williams Cup with a 22-5 victory over Rydal Vikings.

RGC coach Chris Horsman used the showpiece fixture to hand debuts to eight players from the RGC 1404 Under 18s squad, as a resolute rearguard and a late flurry of tries secured a comfortable win.

The fixture, which had been rescheduled from before Christmas, saw RGC take an early 12 point lead, though the Vikings, made up of former Rydal Penrhos school pupils, opened their account with an unconverted try.

But RGC proved too strong, running in another two tries to claim victory.
Marc Roberts the WRU Performance Development Manager for North Wales, said:

"Rydal Vikings proved to be a true test and both teams played with an intent to run the ball.

“This was exactly the type of fixture that RGC needed at this stage of the project.

"The most pleasing aspect of the day for me was the inclusion of eight academy players in the RGC squad, seven of whom were performing in there fist ever senior game and all performed well and looked comfortable with the transition into the senior game."

nRGC 1404 return to action next week with a home fixture with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers on Wednesday, January 18.
