TOP junior swimmers from Rydal Penrhos will be making a splash in Cardiff at the end of the month in the Urdd Senior Swimming Gala.

Six of the school’s best swimmers have qualified for the competition, which will feature the best from Welsh schools.

Old Colwyn brothers Louis and Dylan Coombes, aged 13 and 14, qualified after winning the junior backstroke and the intermediate front crawl and backstroke races respectively.

Year 12 pupil Roy Sterling, from Bodelwyddan, was also successful in two races, claiming first place in the senior breaststroke and backstroke.

The school also secured first place in five relay events, with the senior and intermediate Boys’ teams both successful in the freestyle and medley relays and the intermediate girls’ team claiming first place in the freestyle relay.

Rydal Penrhos Prep School also had three pupils qualify for the gala, with ten year old Matthew Harrison reaching the finals of the freestyle race as well as qualifying with the boys’ freestyle team, whilst Finlay Hare, 9, and Finan Close, 8, won their individual races and formed part of the under 9s relay team.


A 12 YEAR old from St David's College has become the top-ranking backstroke swimmer in the country in his age group.

At the City of Derby Open Meet at Ponds Forge, Sheffield, Alex Rogowski sliced two seconds off his personal best to take first in the 50m Long Course Backstroke event, with a time of 36.33 seconds.

His performance has seen him take the number one spot in the Welsh Amateur Swimming Association rankings.


 

 

Gwalia Winter Darts

THE SEMAPHORE Lodge kept up their campaign at the top of the Gwalia Winter Darts League table after beating The Marine Hotel 9-3.


Mochdre Sports Club remain in three points adrift in second place after defeating six man Dulas Arms 8-4, whilst The Central Hotel were home against the Victoria Club C, who won four games in a row and three doubles to land a matching result.

Colwyn Bay Legion A and the Valentine, could not be separated in their match, sharing both the singles and the doubles games for a 6-6 finish.

In the Second Division, The Colwyn Bay Legion B stay top with a 9-3 victory away to six man Royal Hotel.

Clwb-y-Gornel were level at 4-4 at home against the Royal Hotel C, who won all four doubles games to win by 8-4.

The Boathouse Social Club and Prince Madoc finished all square in a 6-6 draw, and the Mountain View Hotel received a 7-0 walkover after the Ship Hotel Rhos B failed to raise a team.


 

 

 

Clifton Glass Snooker League

LLANDUDNO Cons B lost ground at the top of the Clifton Glass Thursday Snooker League after being held by a battling Legion B.


The star man on the night was Ross Jones who pulled off a brilliant 74 break against George Bartlett, adding to his tally of three breaks over 60 and two others over 40 this season. Steve Ing again chipped in with a great performance for Cons B as well as the reliable Richard King who was taken the wire in a close fought battle with Derek Eccleston.

Legion came back with Tim Williams beating Bill Turner and Glyn Nields getting a win under his belt in a steady game against Alan Davidson.

After his disastrous start Dave Jones is now having a good season and he potted steady to comfortably beat Daniel Jones to earn the home side a 3 -3 draw against the league leaders.

Llan Cons A won a keenly contested match against Crosville A, with Rob Duckenfield claiming an early lead over Joss Evans whose fight back was halted by a rash shot on the green that eventually lead to his loss.

Bryn Morris was too strong for Gwyn Morgans and won easily, whilst Paul Evans gave Dave Philips no chance. Brian Mercer was out of sorts against Paul Thomas, and Phil Hughes was in good form with the help of a 31 break to hold off Chris Black. Some strong potting saw John Hancock complete the 4-2 win.

Penmaenmawr A took a 5-1 win over Legion A, with Gethin Roberts top of the pots on the night, and Cricket A beat Crosville B 4-2.

LLANDUDNO Lightning continue to lead the way in the North Wales Basketball league after a 95-72 win over Wrexham.

Big hitter Ben Lees top scored with 26pts, backed up by 17 from Paul Williams and 15 from Matt Massey, as Lightning extended their unbeaten run to six games.
