COLWYN BAY Running Club champion Nathan Jones continued his fine season by winning the North Wales Under 17s Cross Country Championship at the Rhug Estate, Corwen on Saturday.

The win comes a week after Nathan’s superb fifth place overall and first under 20s place in the Twin Piers 10k, finishing in a personal best of 33min 37sec.

The club also celebrated success in last weekend’s Welsh Indoor Championships in Cardiff, picking up five medals at the meeting.

Top billing went to Abi Backshall, who crowned her debut season with the Under 17’s with gold in the 800m, crossing the line in 2min 22.46sec, while Nathan Thomason won the Under 15 Shot Put with a 12.45m throw.

Josh Ablett was also on the podium in his 800m race, taking silver in the Under 13’s category, while Tom Harding produced a personal best of 1min 59.15sec to take silver in the Under 17s 800m final.

Tom Earley took bronze in his first year at U20 Men level in the 800m final, clocking in at 1min 57.49sec, while Rachel Johncock set a new championship best time of 7.55sec in the heats of the Senior Womens 60m, only for a hamstring injury to count her out of a nailed-on gold medal.
