Double whammy

IT was a double-whammy for Denbigh Rhinos U-8s as they went beaten in a double-header with Prestatyn Athletic Rangers.

They went down to a heavy home defeat in a rearranged league match and also crashed out of the Rhyl Junior League Cup.

The Rhinos started the cup game brightly and Bradley Roberts saw his shot blocked before the visitors took the lead, running in a one-on-one that left goalkeeper Owen Williams exposed.

Rangers doubled their lead before James Thomas was unlucky to see a magnificent top corner free kick effort disallowed.

That could have sparked a revival, especially if both of Gethin Rogers' low drives that followed had gone inside the post instead of agonisingly wide.

Despite the commanding defensive performance of Denbigh's Tomos Jones and keeper Williams' best efforts, Rangers proved too clinical late on - smashing in three late goals to give the tie a harsh 5-0 scoreline.

Whilst the first game had been decided by fine margins, the second match - rearranged due to frost a fortnight ago - showed the visitors’ class.

Despite tenacious defensive work from Dylan Baldwin and close efforts from Lewis Devine and Matthew Howarth, the Rhinos lost out 6-0.
