TOMORROW marks one year since a former social club was burned to the ground in a suspected arson attack.

But the cause of the blaze and the future of the site remain in doubt.

More than 100 people were evacuated from their homes and firefighters spent six hours tackling the blaze which took hold of Shotton Lane Social Club in the early hours of February 4, 2011.

Investigators say damage to the building was so great they have been unable to pinpoint a cause.

Police have made no arrests in connection with the incident and residents believe the cause will never be known.

One mother-of-three, who did not want to be named, said: “It was a massive inferno.

“We were evacuated, we could feel the heat. They were telling us to hurry up and get out.

“Then the electric went out and it was pitch black. If the wind was blowing in the other direction a lot of people could have lost their houses.

The club, which closed its doors in August 2010, was later demolished.

The mother added: “We do not know what is happening with the site. We have heard it might become a factory or supermarket.

“The last we heard was a bowling alley. We would like to see it stay as it is. It is nice and quiet now.”

The club was earmarked for an Islamic Cultural Centre by the Flintshire Muslim Cultural Society (FMCS).

"“The last we heard was a bowling alley. We would like to see it stay as it is. It is nice and quiet now.” ---------- Why don't FCC listen to the locals. Just turn it into a garden for local people. It's their community there are enough buildings in the area anyway.

Not too sure what it's got to dowith FCC, as I beleive it is still privately owned by the club's trustees. Although, a year on, FCC should be serving a notice on it.
