Flintshire woods have become ‘a dumping ground’

A BEAUTY spot has become a dumping ground for fly-tippers.

Greenfield Woods, which runs behind Queen’s Road, has become blighted with dumped rubbish.

Greenfield councillor Rosetta Dolphin is urging members of the public to report the culprits.

“It’s a mess. I have been up there before and there’s been a three-piece suite, washing machines and all sorts,” she said.

“It’s very disappointing, but I don’t think it’s people coming from outside Greenfield to do it.

“If anyone knows who it is, they should report them.”

One Greenfield resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said the situation had got worse since Flintshire Council introduced a new rubbish collection service last November.

The resident said: “Some of the rubbish has been there a while, but it’s increased since the bin collections have changed. You can see the bin bags there.

“The council might have reduced the amount of rubbish going to landfill, but it’s being tipped everywhere else.”

Under the new rules recyclables are collected on a weekly basis, while residual waste is collected fortnightly.

But the service has been fraught with problems since it was introduced with many claiming the new wheelie bins are not big enough.

Cllr Dolphin said it was too early to tell whether the new collection service had led to an increase in fly-tipping.

“The woods there have always been a dumping ground,” she added.

Earlier this week council chiefs agreed to carry out a review of collections following a series of complaints, which is due to start at the end of the month.

Steve Jones, head of streetscene at Flintshire Council, said: “There has not been an increase in reported fly-tipping in the area. However, the area will be inspected on the next waste collection day.”

Steve Jones who is 'the problem' should send his operatives down to Greenfield and clear up the mess. We did not have a problem on the scale we have now until the new collection service was implemented.

Fly tipping doesnt have to be reported for it to be a problem.Sadly people are accepting it as the norm in an area that is being ruined by vandals etc.It is not acceptable and it should be cleared up. FCC staff should be out and about doing what they are paid to do.

There is no need for fly tipping whatever the circumstances... those who do it not only make the place look ugly... they damage wildlife, and that to me is a much bigger crime... I thought Flintshire council used covert cameras to catch the culprits... or was it all just hype to silence those who value our countryside?

IMO, the new bin collections are a convenient excuse. Granted, they haven't exactly gone smoothly but fly tipping has been a problem long before the changes. It's laziness and total disregard for the community. If they're flytipping in Greenfield woods they're only a 60 second car ride from the recycling tip.

amh40, 100% agree. although Flintshire council have messed things up with collections, its not there fault people dump there rubbish in this way....at the same time there street clean team seem to think there is no real problem.

This area has suffered for years, and is a valley with no easy access to remove such items as fridges and large bulky items, nothing to do with the new service, which now works well in Greenfield. Greenfield suffers badly from littering in general, just look around the shops and flats front and worse at the back. Littering all dropped by local people, buying from their own local shops !!!! and yes the council do litterpick on a weekly basis.

Most people in the rest of the country take their rubbish to their recycling centres where it costs nothing to offload your rubbish. How come people in Flintshire are incapable of doing the same? You can hardly blame the changeover to fortnightly collections for the appearance of washing machines and three piece suites in a wood.
