A 3G plastic pitch could be installed at Latham Park as early as this summer, if funding applications are approved.
Newtown AFC’s chairman Elwyn Preece revealed the news following what he said had been a positive response to the proposal at the club’s fans’ forum.
Preece said: “We are in the process of applying for funding and I would like to think we can have a 3G pitch laid in the close season.”
Regarding the fans reaction Preece said: “It was excellent, absolutely excellent.
“They can see where we are going. If you take the last week or so, we have had three games called off and if we had a 3G pitch there is a good possibility they would have gone ahead.”
Preece said that he believes the pitch is essential for the future of the club.
He said: “We have been here for a hundred years and I want to see the club here for the next 100 years, so my grandchildren have somewhere to play or watch football.
“We are having terrible trouble trying to find places to train for the full team, the ladies team and the youths, we just don’t have the facilities.
“We have got players who are from Shrewsbury, Chester, Brecon and these lads are travelling on Tuesday nights to find out the pitch is frozen or too wet and we cannot train on it.
“We want to be more professional than we are. We are in one sense but we don’t have the facilities to fulfill the other part of professionalism, which is making sure there’s somewhere to train when the lads come in.”
Preece said there had been no negative comments from fans who attended the forum.
He said: “There were none whatsoever, we put the case to them that we are in the 21st century and we have to move with the times.”
Preece said that a new pitch would benefit the surrounding area just as much as the football club.
He said: “I have had conversations with managers from other clubs and they have got the same problems with where to train and they would welcome a 3G pitch. It’s not just for Newtown it’s for the community and surrounding areas as well.”
