Road closure hits Rhyl traders

BUSINESS owners say they are suffering in the face of an indefinite road closure.

Traders on Water Street in Rhyl have been calling for an end to restrictions put in place in January after high winds damaged parts of the derelict Honey Club.

Jawaid Iqbal, of Kamran Restaurant, said: “They haven’t even put a sign up saying there’s access available. They need to sort out the building and open half of the road up. I’ve had no joy with the council, they’ve just passed the buck to someone else who won’t get back to me.”

“The council said the street’s still open, and that people should reverse up a one way street to get here, but nobody’s going to do that. They’re already worried about police on the streets without reversing up a one way street. They also said that pubs haven’t been affected, but nobody drives to pubs to have a drink.”

Matthew Corry of Abbey Pets said the road closures had reduced footfall dramatically compared to the same time last year.

He said: “I’m down about 50 per cent. It’s absolutely dropped. Traffic has gone down by about 95 per cent. I’ve sent a letter to the council through Ann Jones AM nearly three weeks ago, but I’ve had no response so far.

“They haven’t told me what’s going on. I’ve asked and asked - and I’m finding it very stressful.”

A council spokeswoman said the emergency measures were put in place to minimise the risk of falling debris to members of the public, residential areas and local businesses.

She said: "We are aware that this is one of the main routes through the town and we are concerned about the impact of the closures on nearby residents and local businesses.

“Denbighshire Officers are actively seeking a suitable solution to allow the road to be reopened and we appreciate the public patience in this matter.”
