THE body of a woman has been found at the foot of Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.
The woman, who has not been formally identified, was pulled from the water in Trevor, near Llangollen, on Monday shortly after 11.30am.
Acting North East Wales coroner John Gittins has been informed.
A spokesman for North Wales Police said: “We were called at 11.36am on Monday to reports of a person in the river at the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct in Trevor, near Llangollen.
“The body of a woman, who has not been formally identified but is believed to be from Shropshire, was later recovered from the water.
“Police are not treating the death as suspicious. The coroner has been informed.”
The 120-ft aqueduct was cordoned off for more than an hour while police made investigations.
An ambulance and one fire engine from Llangollen were called to the World Heritage Site but were not required to take action.
The body was recovered from the water with the help of the Canal and River Trust.
A spokesman said: “We’re assisting the emergency services and our thoughts are with the family.”
Keith Darlington, 76, who lives near the aqueduct, said: “I was leaving my house to go to the shop when I saw a police man running along the canal path towards the
aqueduct.
“Later I saw a police car and an ambulance near the scene and I guessed the worst had happened.
“The helicopter was out for several hours in the afternoon.”
Ronald Watson, 78, said: “A police car was parked near my home for an hour or so while they made enquiries.”
Another witness who works on nearby Station Road said police were interviewing passers-by after the incident.
Councillor Pat Jeffares, who represents the Llangollen Rural ward on Wrexham Council, said: “My sympathy goes out to the family at this time.”
