A ROW has broken out after an animal rights group urged Conwy residents to boycott a Circus when it visits the area this week.

Animal Defenders International have ordered the action against Circus Mondao whilst it is performing in Penmaenmawr from July 9 to 13, as it is one of only two circuses left in the UK that still perform with wild animals.

Jan Creamer, president of Animal Defenders International, said: “Animals with travelling circuses are on the road for almost the entire year. They have to endure constant transportation and live in rudimentary, temporary accommodation.

“We urge everyone in the Penmaenmawr area to shun animal circuses and instead visit circuses with human only acts.”

An inspection report for the circus last year reportedly revealed a number of animal welfare concerns, something that has been strenuously denied by the Circus, who are in the process of taking action following these allegations.

A Circus Mondao spokesperson said: “We are registered and regularly inspected by Government authorities, so there is nothing wrong whatsoever with the way we treat our animals.

“We are a traditional family circus and it is just a shame that we seem to be fighting against this sort of thing all the time.”
