A COLWYN Bay eyesore is set to be torn down within weeks.

Work to demolish Market Hall will start by the end of the month and calls have now been made for an indoor entertainment venue such as an ice rink or a ten-pin bowling alley to attract visitors to the town.

The contract to demolish Market Hall has been awarded to J Freeley Ltd after Conwy Council acquired the site last year.

Cllr Viv Perry, mayor of Colwyn Bay, said: “This is good news for the town.

“I would like to see some form of indoor entertainment for the young people or tourists when it is raining. An ice rink or a bowling alley.

“This is an opportunity for the town.

“It needs to be something to benefit the town and be attractive."

Conwy's cabinet member for communities, Cllr Phil Edwards, said: “Market Hall is an important site to see redeveloped given its prominent location between Station Square and Penrhyn Road.

“It was important we appointed a contractor able to tackle such a complex project.

“The demolition will be challenging, with hazardous materials on site, a listed building next door and the A55 and railway to the rear.

“Clearing the site will, at last, make future redevelopment possible.”

As part of the Bay Life+ regeneration project, Conwy County Borough Council and Welsh Government have purchased a number of properties throughout Colwyn Bay.

The former Market Hall has been an eye-sore in the town for many years, but to redevelop the site in line with the Colwyn Bay development Masterplan it was essential that the buildings were all under single ownership.

A spokesman for the council said clearing work on the site is expected to take two months and would start later this month.

“Once the site has been cleared it will be sold for redevelopment in accordance with the development and design briefs agreed by cabinet.”
