AN application to build wind turbines near Llanrwst has been refused.

The site, at Llys Dymper in Gwytherin, was earmarked for 10 turbines by Wind Power Wales, and the plans were denied by Conwy Council at a planning committee meeting on last week.

Resident Phillip Coombs, said: “While we respect the Government initiatives to find alternative means of power throughout Wales, this site does not meet the requirements met by the Welsh Government and I ask that planning permission be refused.”

Rhys Jones, a representative of Wind Power Wales said: “This site will provide sustainable area to the region for the next 25 years, and it would cause no serious disruption to the agriculture or wildlife in the area.”

Committee chair Cllr Chris Cater stated that a site visit had been conducted and there had been some contradiction as to the actual size of the Wind Farm, but on further analysis each turbine would now be reduced from 83 metres to 71 metres to coincide with the new proposal.

Gwytherin Cllr Dilwyn Roberts, said: “This application should not be considered a viable option simply for the transportation difficulties alone and residents are deeply concerned that this lack of access will damage the community.”

In front of a packed gallery, the Committee refused permission by a vote of 11-3, causing spontaneous applause from the onlookers in opposition to the plans.

It is not known whether an appeal will be lodged.
