BEACHES in Conwy County have received a range of accolades in the Keep Wales Tidy Coast Awards.

Keep Wales Tidy has unveiled this year’s Coast Awards today (22 May). The Awards are made up of the the Blue Flag Award, the UK Seaside Award and the Green Coast Award.

This year Penmaenmawr gained a Blue Flag Award and Llanfairfechan, Llandudno West Shore and Rhos on Sea retained their Blue Flags.

Blue Flag status acknowledges the water quality, safety and environmental management of beaches and also considers environmental education and information provided for visitors.

The Seaside Award was retained by North Shore (Llandudno), Abergele/Pensarn and Kinmel Bay.

This is given to beaches which attract a range of visitors and which, as well as meeting water quality standards, are also expected to provide good facilities such as toilets, access for disabled people, car parks and cafes.

Kinmel Bay also retained its Green Coast Award which is designed for beaches that have excellent water quality, but are better known for their natural, unspoiled environment.

Matthew Forbes, Harbourmaster for Conwy County Borough Council said, “We are delighted that Penmaenmawr has achieved Blue Flag status this year, and that a number of other beaches in Conwy County have retained a range of these Coast Awards. The awards are an important part of our tourism offer, and tourism plays a vital role in the local economy.”

Lesley Jones, Chief Executive for Keep Wales Tidy said: “The Wales Coast Awards play a vital role in the continuing growth of coastal and marine tourism. They act as a mark of excellence, ensuring sites are managed effectively and showcasing our beautiful country to an international audience. Visitors to our award-winning beaches, marinas and boat tour operators can be sure they have arrived at a quality destination.

“I’d like to congratulate our winners and thank everyone who has been involved in making this year’s Wales Coast Awards a great success.”
