Artwork by Conwy pupils brightens up building site

Last year, local artist Mai Thomas was commissioned to work with young people to develop imagery for the hoardings around the site of the new Coed Pella office development in the heart of Colwyn Bay.

The themed hoardings focus on the rich architectural heritage found along Conway Road. 

The young people’s designs were influenced by the decorative details on the exterior and interiors of buildings in the area, and their finished work has been digitally reproduced onto the construction site hoardings. 

Wes Erlam, development director for Muse Developments, said: “It’s great to get Colwyn’s Bay’s young people involved in the new Coed Pella office scheme - their brilliant designs have really brightened up the hoardings.

“This project is an important part of the town’s future, providing new energy-efficient accommodation for the Council and improving the surrounding landscape.”

The schools and youth groups involved in the project were Ysgol Eirias, Ysgol Pen-y-Bryn, Ysgol Sant Joseff, Ysgol Nant y Groes and Colwyn Bay Youth Group.
Pupils from Ysgol Sant Joseff turned up last Thursday (May 25) to see their final artwork unveiled.

Neil Brook, Regional Director for main contractor Bowmer and Kirkland, said: “We place great emphasis on engaging with communities local to our construction projects.

We’re delighted to be involved with the new council offices in Colwyn Bay and this fantastic opportunity to take the inspired artwork produced by local school children and create a hoarding that tells a story linking the past to construction of the future.”

Bleddyn Evans, Conwy County Borough Council added: “The children and young people’s work has now been captured in the final artwork on the site hoardings. 
“The local heritage images capture the past, whereas these young people represent the present and the future of our town.”

The new council buildings are currently under construction and if all goes to schedule will be completed in 2018.
