COLEG Llandrillo students are among the world’s best.

Internationa Baccalaureate (IB) students are celebrating after receiving scores which placed them in the top 5 per cent in the world.

Every student on the course passed their International Baccalaureate (IB), a university entrance qualification by over 140 countries worldwide, and several gained scores placing them in the top five per cent in the world.

It is based around detailed academic study of a wide range of subjects, including languages, the arts, science, maths, history and geography. Depending on the individual score achieved, the IB Diploma can be the equivalent of six A-levels at grade 'A'.

Maria Tracey-Fortin from Colwyn Bay, scored 37 points. Maria, who learned German during her studies, is hoping to move to Berlin during her gap year.

She said: “The course was intense, but thoroughly rewarding. I am really looking forward to starting my new adventure.”

Evan Brockbank from Rhos-on-Sea, is planning to study for a joint honours’ degree in Psychology and Business at Aston University in Birmingham after scoring 31 points.

He hopes to carve out a career as an occupational psychologist after his university studies.

IB course co-ordinator, Nick Weatherall, said: “The college has been offering the IB Diploma as an alternative to A-levels for over 20 years. The IB provides a broad education and develops personal skills which are invaluable for university studies. Recent students have gained places at some of the top universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, York, Imperial College, Royal Veterinary College, Bath, Bristol, Cardiff and Edinburgh.”
