A CRITICALLY acclaimed play set amidst the American Aids crisis of the 1980s is being screened at Theatr Colwyn.

Andrew Garfield, known for roles in Silence and Hacksaw Ridge, plays the lead role of Walter Prior in Angels In America: Part One, Millennium Approaches (15), which will be broadcast live from the National Theatre, London, to Colwyn Bay on July 20.

Against the background of a conservative Ronald Reagan presidency, New Yorkers grapple with life and death, love and sex, heaven and hell.

Appearing alongside Garfield is Denise Gough, known for her role in Places and Things; Nathan Lane, a star of The Producers;, James McArdle, who has featured in Star Wars: The Force Awakens; and Russell Tovey, who has previously played roles in Him and Her and BBC One drama Sherlock.

This new staging of Tony Kushner’s multi-award winning two-part play is directed by Olivier and Tony award-winning director Marianne Elliott, who is known for her work on The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and War Horse.

It has received universal acclaim from critics.

The second half of the story, Perestroika, will be shown on September 7 at Theatr Colwyn.
