AN ABERCONWY MP revealed that since the general election, he has been forced to lodge four different complaints to the chief constable of North Wales Police.

Guto Bebb made the admission after declaring that levels of abuse and threats of violence – towards politicians – had “escalated to an unacceptable level.”

“Earlier this month, Mr Bebb was sent two letter Eurwyn Thomas, a constituent and serving police officer within the North Wales Police force. Mr Bebb called the letters, written in Welsh, as “abusive” and “rude” and in reply to a comment made by Mr Thomas - “as long as I have an a***hole, I will campaign every day to get rid of you as an MP” – he said: “I told Mr Thomas that he clearly still had his, since he was talking through it.”

In a statement, the Welsh Conservative Party politician went on to say: “I have had no choice other than to formally write to the chief constable on this issue, making Mr Thomas the fourth police officer to have been the subject of correspondence between myself and the Chief Constable since the general election.

“My respect and admiration towards the vast majority of police officers is absolute.”

Last Wednesday a debate in Parliament on "Abuse and intimidation of candidates and the public in UK elections” was held. Both Mr Bebb and David Jones, MP for Clwyd West, attended.

Mr Jones said: “I have stood in six general elections and this was by a long chalk one of the most unpleasant.

“One point I wish to raise and that is the issue of social media. Twitter in particular I believe has a lot to answer for. Logging on to Twitter these days is rather like waging through sewage. It is a deeply unpleasant experience and the sort of commentary, that one sees on Twitter, the sort of abuse, the sort of language, that is used. It is the sort of thing that no one would dream of saying to another persons face.”

A spokesperson for North Wales Police confirmed that the force had “recently received correspondence from Mr Bebb”.

She added: “Matters will be examined.”
