PLANS to build a traditional windmill as a home which will generate electricity for 40 other properties is to go before planners.

The scheme at Bryn Pydew, Llandudno Junction, combines a time-honoured country building with the latest environmentally friendly technology.

Allan Evans, a retired electronics expert who submitted the planning application to Conwy County Borough Council, said: “I want to build a six-storey traditional windmill as a home which will also generate electricity for another 40 houses. It will look like one of the windmills used for grinding corn which dotted the countryside 300 years ago.

“The idea came to me 25 years ago when I visited a windmill in Lincolnshire and thought how wonderful it would be to live in one and if it could be adapted to generate electricity, how much better that would be. The mill will have four bedrooms and a hexagonal 28 foot base which will form the lounge.

“I prepared the design myself working with a structural engineer, so it will comply with all the current building and insulation regulations. I anticipate it will cost up to £500,000 to build.

He added the top floor would contain the generating room with state of the art equipment and electronic controls which will ensure the sails are always pointing into the wind.

Mr Evans, aged 64, said that by supplying electricity to other homes, the windmill will not be just carbon neutral, but truly carbon negative.

It will be a house like no other and will make a major sustainable contribution making other eco houses looking positively power hungry by comparison.

The mill’s sails will be more than 80 foot in diameter will operate effectively at slow speeds to make them all but silent yet exceptionally powerful. They will look traditional but will incorporate modern aerodynamics for maximum efficiency.
