The Rhos-on-Sea Tennis has cleaned up at the Tennis Wales Awards recently.

A combination of some of the brightest young talents as well as some of the most experienced and talented coaches/players in the country has led to a number of top gongs at the recent awards ceremony held in Cardiff.

Jonathon Dawes took home the Inspire2coach Young Volunteer award, Tony Costa won this year's Tennis Wales Outstanding Achievement Award while the club's men's first team was awarded the title of team of the year.

Rhos-on-Sea Tennis Club chairman, Mike Pemberton, said: "The increase in members from juniors to seniors at the club is instrumental in our clubs success at the Wales Tennis awards.

"This has been achieved with a great coaching regime from Craig Stock and LTC staff, making tennis fun for all ages and all abilities."

Robert Forde, who is a member of the men's first team, said his sides award was unexpected as were the three titles they claimed in the most recent season - the North Wales Division one, North Wales Shield and North Wales Cup.

Forde said: "All the men's and ladies teams at Rhos on Sea did really well last season and there is a great club atmosphere. The whole club is proud and looking forward to the new season."

Fifteen year-old Jonathon, who attends Rhyl High School, took out the young volunteer award for the countless hours spent inspiring juniors and, among other achievements, organised tennis fundraiser £1650 for Comic Relief.

He said: "I was very pleased and humbled to have won the Inspire2coach Young Volunteer of the year award for the whole of Wales. I want to grow the sport because I think it's a great sport and it's important to so many people."

Just a few short years ago 68 year-old Costa weighed more than 26 and a half stone. Now having lost 11 stones, just over four of which he lost playing tennis, he now has a Tennis Wales Outstanding Achievement Award.

He said: "It's an amazing feeling (to have won the award). I'm sixty eight years old and since taking up tennis have normal blood pressure and am no longer on heart medication. I get a real adrenalin rush from playing tennis and enjoy practising and coaching sessions as much as playing."
